Foraged minerals, botanical textures, rainwater, and reclaimed glaze become grounding, beautiful surfaces for the spaces we inhabit.

Step into the pop up exhibition at the Design Healdsburg Headquarters and hear directly from the artist as she walks you through the work in place: modular glaze paintings, large scale ceramic panel sequences, architectural vessels, and new prototypes using salvaged McIntyre tile as a substrate for botanical textures. Stein is redefining what ceramic can do in architectural space, from large-scale installations to surfaces that respond to land, sky, and site.

She’ll share the stories behind her commissions for homes, hospitality, and healing spaces, and how she works with architects and designers to shape ceramic art to the scale and character of a site.

Kala Stein is a ceramics artist and teacher based in Sonoma representing issues of climate and weather in her work. Last year, she did a large installation of an atmospheric river storm in a series of clay tiles. Part of her process includes using rain water to representing the weather affects in the glaze.
