Is there a Greene and Greene house in Healdsburg? The masters of the American Arts and Crafts movement whose masterpiece is the Gamble House in Pasadena, never got the chance to design a home in Sonoma County. Ninety Five (95) years later, however, in 2002, Bruce Aidells, the sausage king, and Nancy Oakes, chef and restauranter (Boulevard in San Francisco) passionate about Arts and Crafts objects and furniture, hired Emeryville architect Greg Klein of John Malick & Associates to design them a Greene and Greene inspired home on a spectacular site west of Healdsburg.
The Aidells/Oakes House is an Arts and Crafts masterpiece that fits comfortably in the cannon of the American Arts & Crafts movement and in particular, Greene & Greene’s work. The house is so authentic it is hard to believe that it was built in the early 21st century. Every piece of wood, nail head, bracket, light fixture, stone and tile supports the integrity of the whole and was selected lovingly, mostly by Aidells himself. It reflects the movement’s ideals of authenticity, craftsmanship and integration with nature. In addition, Aidells and Oakes filled their home with original Arts and Crafts treasures.
This tour of the Aidells/Oakes house is a very special and rare opportunity to experience a significant piece of architecture that is not open to the public. The tours are limited to 25 people, and this is sure to be a highlight of the Design Healdsburg weekend.
